Chapter 1 (1)

As the dire wolf was about to sink his teeth into my neck I had a flashback as to how it all started… It was a cold rainy day and I was soaked, tired and in a bad mood when I reached the village. Right from the start I saw the inhabitants’ mistrust of adventurers. Wherever I went people were taking their children inside and closing windows.

It made my foul mood even worse, I couldn’t even count the number of times I helped people just like these and still they treated us no better than a common criminal. Over the years, I had became resigned to it, with such treatment being common in most small villages. Adjusting the hood of my cloak over my head I continued straight towards the inn…

winter forest

“I am a forest, and a night of dark trees:
but he who is not afraid of my darkness,
will find banks full of roses
under my cypresses.”
~Friedrich Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra

“The most valuable possession you can own is an open heart.
The most powerful weapon you can be is an instrument of peace.”
~Carlos Santana

The entire forest was agitated. Leaves were chatting to one another and the wind, tree spirits were nodding their heads, squirrels were running on the branches to find a better view and little bushes were grumbling that big trees were obscuring their view. The whole attention was directed towards the path.

Two people were walking slowly, a man and a woman. Both had the faces of teenagers but their eyes betrayed the depth of their true age. Both had similar features: straight black hair, deep brown eyes and pale skin, both were slim and graceful and both seemed to enjoy each other’s company. They were walking alongside for a while until the man asked the woman telepathically if he could hold her hand. She accepted gladly and smiled to him, apparently enjoying the warm and tender touch of his skin. The girl soon wrapped her arm around his waist and laid her head against his chest as they were walking, with the man holding her tenderly too.

The forest was not too dense, with trees lining both sides of the path. The weather was very warm with the sun shining through the leaves. The trees’ shade, together with a light wind blowing, kept the couple cool during their walk. The forest began to gossip again. They both seemed mature and sensitive, it was visible through their deep dark eyes. The man had a serious, reserved look on his face but when the girl raised her head and looked at him with a wide smile, he smiled back immediately. She had serene, dreamy eyes and emanated with joyous energy, the man was holding her softly and soaking up with her aura. The woman sensed that quickly and began sending him thoughts of how much she enjoyed his presence, that he was worthy and she was not going to leave him. His smile became even wider.

Still holding each other, they headed for the single house on the hill which was set apart from the rest. It was situated right on the edge of the forest, overlooking the village and had a marvellous seaside view. During the whole journey they spoke no words and yet seemed to remain in a perfect peace and harmony. The whole forest was agitated again. Who were they?
